Last Week's Program

Kris Adam was our chair for the evening
We welcomed Terry Thornton and Jenny Acopian back from their travels and we were delighted to welcome Katherine Sykes to membership of our Club.
We were joined by Past District Governor Jane Cox, District Governor Elect Phil Beasley and Assistant Governor Judy Beasley, the District 9780 chair for Australian Rotary Health Catherine Eagleson, Rotaractor and past Rotary Exchange student from our Club Andrew Douglass and a group of our Rotary Exchange students currently being hosted in our District 9780.

Tony Talk
President Tony noted that both Gary Newton and Kris Adam have been “full on Facebook” posting features on Ross Taylor and Graham Thomson.
We are encouraged to “post” and “share” – it’s the modern way of getting our Rotary message out and about.

The Evening’s Activity – Greg Ross and Lift The Lid
Rotarian and Past District Governor Greg Ross was a most entertaining and informative speaker on the great work of Australian Rotary Health in research into the prevention of mental illness.
Greg spoke of how mental illness had very recently touched his own family and we all were called to awareness of the issue in our family and working lives.
It was a marvellous evening with a vitally important message delivered with warmth, understanding and humour by Greg.
We can support the work of Australian Rotary Health on Thursday 10 October by attending a two course lunch at Van Loon’s Café at 12.30 pm.
The cost is $65.00 per head with $25.00 from each ticket going to raise funds for mental health research.
Tickets can be purchased from www.trybooking.com/551383

Announcements, News and Help Required

Parking changes
We need to note that parking on the north side of our meeting venue will be unavailable for some time due to building works.
We should park on the Boundary Road side.

Christ Church Meals
The previous evening (the 5th Monday) was a busy time and those taking part were ably assisted by the Rotary Exchange students.

Footy Night Fundraiser
Warren reported that the Footy Colours event last week was a great success and raised significant funds for the Fight Cancer Foundation.

News From Head Office
Assistant Governor Judy gave us an update on what’s what and where in 9780.

Presentation of Rotary International Presidential Citation
Past President David Sykes accepted on behalf of our Club the Rotary International Presidential Citation with gold distinction for our achievements in the last Rotary year.

Eddification - The plus in PolioPlus
When we talk about PolioPlus, we know we are eradicating polio, but do we realize how many added benefits the program brings?
The “plus” is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign.
It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water.
It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap.
Learn how we are doing so much more than eradicating polio with our PolioPlus program.

Our Fifty Years
Earlier we were sent an email to put aside a date in February 2020 to join with the members, past members and friends of The Rotary Club of Geelong East in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the club.

The date has had to be changed.  The new date is 23rd February, 2020.  That is two days after our actual Charter Anniversary and is the date of Rotary International's birthday.

Please put aside the date and the organising committee will keep us informed of additional information over the next few months.

It's nearly Geelong Show Time!....and we need volunteers!
If you are free on October 12th between 9:30am and 1pm, come along to the Geelong Show Clean Up Day!
Even if we have sufficient numbers for the actual clean up, it gives you a chance to see “the before” and if you are a new member, you can see what goes where before the Show starts in earnest
Clean Up Days are used to make sure the premises are spick and span before the show begins. So bring gloves and a bit of elbow grease and get cleaning!
If you are unable to get on to Clubrunner, please do not hesitate to contact Yannick.

Geelong Show – 17,18 & 19 October
The roster is available on Club Runner and a roster showing dates and times will also be available at the Club meetings.
Please put this one in your diaries. We need all hands on deck as we can only give away to our chosen charitable causes that which we make and we make most from this event.
This year with every shift (there are 4 shifts each day) there will be a Shift Supervisor and a First Aider.
The idea is to relieve Adrian and John from having to be across every aspect of the operation – financial, operations and supply – throughout the entire Show.
Another new role is that of The Go-fer who will need to be available outside the Show Grounds to source and bring in supplies as needed.
