The Science and Engineering Challenge
Many thanks to President Elect Tony Alsop for his excellent work on the preparation for and implementation of the Science and Engineering Challenge.
Tony has been the chair of the District Science and Engineering Challenge for many years and the success of the event is a testament to his skill and dedication and to the many hours of time which his committee and individual Rotarians, partners and friends put into the program.
The influence of the Science and Engineering Challenge is seen in the large number of first year university science and engineering students who are coming to study in these areas as a result of involvement in the S & E Challenge in their secondary school years.
The Dinner Auction

Wine contributions will continue to be gratefully received but no more items for auction can be taken as time is required to prepare the lists of lots...because there are lots and lots of lots to list!

Anam Cara
Anam Cara
Anam Cara provides hospice care in Geelong and has outgrown its current building next to St Mary’s Basilica in Myers St.
They are proposing a new facility located on the Deakin University Campus at Waurn Ponds which will cost $18 million.
This facility will provide 20 beds (they now have 4), day care rooms and will incorporate educational places for workplace training.
Five million dollars has been sourced from the Australian Government, another $5 million is being sought from the Victorian Government and the remaining $8 million is being asked of the local community.
This community fundraising is being kicked-off with a dinner auction on the 16th May at Truffleduck which is partnering with Rotary and providing the dinner at zero cost so that the total cost of $175.00 per head for tickets will go to the fundraising for this project.
With 200 tickets, this will kick off the funds with an immediate $35,000.
If each Rotary club in Geelong can book one table of ten then that will be good start to the sale of tickets.

There is an opportunity to add Rotary branding to this project that will show that Rotary in Geelong does care for those people going through a very distressing time when they or someone to whom they are close is near the end of their life.
No meeting on 16 April
Our Club meeting of 16 April has been cancelled to allow members to find places to store all the items they purchased at the Dinner Auction.
The Warracknabeal Weekend
The weekend visit to Warracknabeal was enjoyed by all who made the trip.
There were over 100 at the Paddock to Plate dinner and Stan gave the commentary on the shearing display.
Stan reported that the event was an excellent source of "external cash" for the local community.
The Rotary Club of Essendon donated $1,500.00 towards youth scholarships and apprentice training and the Rotary Club of Wyndham contributed $1,000.00 to mental health initiatives.
Members and families from the Rotary Club of Belmont, Cheltenham, Horsham, Horsham East and Werribee also attended to partake of the local hospitality.
Barwon River Safety Markers Project Official Opening
Wednesday 17 April at 10.30 am will be the official unveiling of the Barwon River Safety Markers at BAR042 at the Moorabool Street boat ramp on the southern side of the Barwon River, Geelong opposite the rowing clubs.
Wear your Rotary badge, hats and shirts etc as it will be an event getting broad media coverage.
Help Wanted – Volunteers for RYDA Youth Road Safety Program – Monday 27 May
Karen Pecar who is the president of the Rotary Club of Queenscliff is seeking the assistance of Rotarians for this progam.
Six Rotary volunteers are required to guide groups of students from session to session.
The students will be supervised by class teachers.
The program runs at Beckley Park, Corio and volunteers will be required from 8.00 am to 3.00 pm with morning tea and lunch provided.
Our Club in the Community
Laurent Franklin represented our Club at the Gordon scholarship presentation and was much impressed by the generosity of the Geelong community.
Our scholar recipient Madeline Greaves is studying agriculture with a special interest in sustainable agriculture.
Attending to attending
We need to book in if we are attending.
If we do book in and we don't attend, we must pay the next week.
If we don’t book in and do attend, we can’t expect to be fed…the loaves and fishes thing isn’t a miracle upon which reliance can be placed at all catering venues.

Trivia night - Highton Bowls Club Saturday 4 May.
This is a Rotaract Club of Barwon event fundraising for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
The venue is on the corner of Roslyn and North Valley Roads, Highton with drinks at bar prices and supper provided.
Kris Adam has more details and we can put together a table or two and prove that Rotarians know more about less than most other comparably knowledgble people.
Assisting in our community
We have been asked by the St. Albans Football Club and the Newcomb Football Club to assist in looking after the gate at home games.
The job is to take the admission cost as vehicles enter.

Whoozin when Sue’s Out?
With no meeting on 16 April and Sue Beretta overseas (“the pipes, the pipes are calling”..), Sue Dunlop will be managing Whoozin for the following 3 weeks.
Rotary Leadership Institute
This is an opportunity to explore leadership opportunities and expand/update your Rotary knowledge.
The program is conducted at 5 centres across the District (Charlton, Terang, Geelong, Casteron and Ballarat) and each has 3 days to the program, the first in August or September, the second in October or November and the third in February of 2029.
Registrations close 30 June 2019 and the Geelong dates are 17 August, 12 October and 8 February.

Swap Meet - Saturday 11 May
This is another Hamburger Stand catering opportunity which can produce around $3,000.00 for our charitable projects funds.
It is rumoured that Geelong East hamburgers which were sold at the Swap Meet in 2005 are now changing hands for upwards of $500.00….that’s how rare they were!
Workers are required between 7.00 am and 3.00 pm and a roster will be circulated as the date approaches.
