Last Week's Program

Our meeting of 3 April
Tony Alsop was our chair for our meeting.
We welcomed back Harrie Farnaby after her absence and it was great to have Anna Fletcher with us for the Science and Engineering Challenge challenge.

We were joined by Jane Bolton and husband Robert Wright, our past Rotary Exchange student Andrew Douglass, our Science and Engineering Challenge friends from Newcastle and Deakin Universities and our Rotarian Royals Judy & Phil Beasley.

Welcome to our new member Jane Bolton
We had the great pleasure of celebrating the induction of Jane to membership of our Club and we look forward to sharing Rotary service and friendship with Jane in the years ahead.

Science and Engineering Challenge Evening
It was cross party bipartisan infrastructure development on a local but nationally significant broad based basis delivering for working families through utilising sustainable materials...paper, scissors but, alas, no rock.
The Bulletin Editor, lacking structural integrity and nursing a couple of nasty paper cuts and splinters from the wooden stirrers, confined his contribution to the following:

Rotarians, they sat in awe.
Their mouths, as one, agape.
"Construct a tower within the hour
Of twigs and sticking tape?"
“To bear great weight upon its top?”
“The structure unsupported?”
“It can't be done”...they called as one,
“A foolish quest”, they snorted.

But spouse of newest member Jane.
Aye, Robert was his name.
A quiet unassuming chap
Was Wright up for the game.
He set to work...he cut, he trimmed,
He measured...and...perfection!
The ladies at his table swooned!
Beholding his...confection.

Announcements, News and Help Required

Anam Cara

Anam Cara provides hospice care in Geelong and has outgrown its current building next to St Mary’s Basilica in Myers St.

They are proposing a new facility located on the Deakin University Campus at Waurn Ponds which will cost $18 million.
This facility will provide 20 beds (they now have 4), day care rooms and will incorporate educational places for workplace training.
Five million dollars has been sourced from the Australian Government, another $5 million is being sought from the Victorian Government and the remaining $8 million is being asked of the local community.

This community fundraising is being kicked-off with a dinner auction on the 16th May at Truffleduck which is partnering with Rotary and providing the dinner at zero cost so that the total cost of $175.00 per head for tickets will go to the fundraising for this project.
With 200 tickets, this will kick off the funds with an immediate $35,000.
If each Rotary club in Geelong can book one table of ten then that will be good start to the sale of tickets.
Please book your seat with President David by 2nd May.

There is an opportunity to add Rotary branding to this project that will show that Rotary in Geelong does care for those people going through a very distressing time when they or someone to whom they are close is near the end of their life.

District Assembly
District Assembly Sunday 28 April at Ararat is a great opportunity to learn about Rotary in our District and internationally and to refresh your Rotary enthusiasm.
If you would like to attend, please see President Elect Tony.

Remember on your arrival at the meetings to sign the register for the St Albans Football and Netball Club liquor licensing requirements.

Funds from Afar
Club Secretary Jenny announced that the Club has received a Commonwealth grant of $6,000.00.
This is a result of Jenny and Yannick's expertise and tireless endeavour.

Youth Exchange
Kris Adam reminded us of the Youth Exchange opportunities for hosting incoming students and our Club sponsoring an outgoing student.
See Kris for more information.

Our Club in Our Community
Adrian thanked the members who assisted the Newcomb Power Football Club at the recent sausage sizzle and Jenny added that our Club is working on a District Grant application to support the community project which Newcomb Power has put forward to assist them to expand their junior program into development schools and kindergartens.

Trivia Time
Wednesday 1 May will be an evening of trivia and Rotarians know trivia.
If you would like to take part, contact Kris Adam.
There are tables of 8 to be taken and the cost is $15.00 per head…and yet, a table of 10 will only cost $100.00.
The venue is the Kardinia Centre....the location of which is the first trivia question?
Call Kris Adam for directions.
And to get you trivializing….Can you name 2 singers or singing groups who claimed to have had no regrets?

The Entertainment Book
Graeme (“The Bookie”) Fleet has these available now.
See Tony Alsop’s recent email as to the method to obtain the Entertainment Book app.
