Warren was our chair for the evening and Past President Tony Alsop stood in for President David.
We welcomed Pam Mott and Sue Beretta's guest Ash, a former Rotaractor.
The Fight Cancer Foundation Our guest speaker was Eric Wright from the Fight Cancer Foundation. Eric has been with the organisation for over 2 decades and is a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne. The Fight Cancer Foundation was formerly known as the Rotary Bone Marrow Research Centre established 27 years ago which has developed a register of donors for blood cancers. The organization also operates the Chord Blood Bank which harvests human stem cells. With the advances in technology and expertise in the field, the opportunities exist to engineer cells for human therapeutic treatment. The Fight Cancer Foundation volunteer shops are keen to receive donations of goods. BMDI Rotary House was founded in 2003 to provide accommodation for patients after bone marrow transplantation. In 2013, in a joint project with service clubs in Albury, the Foundation built The Hilltop Accommodation Centre with $5 million raised in 18 months. The next step is to add another 10 apartments at a cost of $3 million to cope with increased demand in the catchment and the increased scope and range of cancer treatments. This is another fine example of Rotary joining with other community organisations to deliver a much needed service.
