RI President’s Peace Conference Report

Our own Past President Warren Norton spoke of his attendance at the Sydney Rotary International Conference earlier this year with over 700 other delegates including James & Sue Dunlop and their daughter Margaret and Pauline Stewart, President of Highton and PDG Jane Cox.

There were people from UK, USA, NZ, South Africa and Australia.

The range of speakers and topics was considerable.  Speakers came from Bangladesh, Rwanda and the USA with many Australian speakers.

Warren found every speaker had something of importance to offer, there were three who stood out for him.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and originator of the Microcredit and Social Enterprise concepts, Professor Muhummad Yunus was the key note speaker and challenged everyone to rethink the ideas of modern economics to allow peace to prevail.  Yunus spoke of a “World of Three Zeros”. Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment and Zero Carbon Emissions.

Prof. Yunus highlighted the fact that 8 people hold more wealth than the poorest people, who number 3.5 billion.  While not suggesting taking from the rich to give to the poor, Yunus, believes that the poor need to be given the tools and opportunities to create their own wealth.

Steve Killelea, founder of the Institute of Economics & Peace established the Institute because while people spoke about how bad the world was, there were no statistics to prove the point one way or the other.  In 2017 the world was a more peaceful place than in 2016. For many, this does not seem right, and yet the facts prove it.

Shane Phillips from the Indigenous community in Redfern, spoke of bringing peace between the Police and the Indigenous community.  He did so through bringing the parties together to tell each other their stories and to listen and learn.  Following that, they established sports clubs in which the police participated, coaching and mentoring youth.  The crime rate of Redfern fell by 88% as a result.

Warren’s message to all members was that if you have the opportunity to attend a District Conference, RI Convention or a Presidential themed conference, do so.  The experience broadens your understanding of the Rotary world and work and creates great opportunities to meet with like minded people from all over the world.
