Last Week's Program

We welcomed back President Bryan from his overseas trip and we were delighted to share the evening with lots of guests.

We extend our sympathies to Satbir and his family on the loss of his father.

President Bryan announced that David Sykes is our President Elect and there has been a first meeting of the Leadership Group.

Any member of the Club is welcome to attend the  Leadership Group meetings.

Ross Taylor will attend to represent our Club at the AGM of our Rotaract Club on 17 October.

Leo with our Rotary Exchange students is  fundraising and is selling raffle tickets with a trip to Tasmania as the prize. The draw will be at District Conference.

Leo is keen to get around with other Rotarians so contact Sue Beretta if you would like to have Leo.

December 3 will be a Bunnings Waurn Ponds sausage sizzle fund raiser. More details to follow.

Tony Alsop displayed one of our Barwon River Safety Markers which prominently displays our Club name.
We thank Keith Dawson for his commitment to this project.

President Bryan has Lift the Lid stickers to promote the Australian Rotary Health program on mental health awareness.

Our guest speaker - Past District Governor Jessie Harman
Jessie spoke on the changing nature of volunteering and the ways that Clubs are responding and how we can keep Rotary strong.

We now have digital volunteering (is this where you do have to raise a finger?) - using the internet to find projects, to fund projects and indeed to do projects.

More and more organizations support employees in volunteering  (workplace volunteering) and people may be attracted to volunteering for a cause more so than for an organization.

Volunteering is episodic too these days which is at odds with the Rotary model of organisational volunteering.

How is Rotary adapting to these changes?

Clubs can review their practices and procedures.

Clubs can design committee structures to suit itself.

A club may grow in membership and community standing by the work it does - for example, Maryborough and its work against domestic and family violence.

There are corporate and associate members.

There are projects where Rotary clubs and other community groups join in fundraising  - for example, the Ballarat Swap Meet.

There are satellite clubs and the eClubs.

But we should keep in mind the core principles of Rotary - the ethical values, the focus on youth and the magnificent work of the Rotary Foundation.

And we need to keep telling the Rotary story and remember that we enjoy the service and friendship of Rotary because someone asked us to join a Rotary Club.

Defying the Drift - 25 to 27 September 2017
Stan Deans urges us to become involved in District 9780’s program, Defying the Drift, aimed at raising the awareness of young people to opportunities to pursue careers in agriculture. The residential program will be held at Marcus Oldham College from 25 to 27 September 2017. Stan has already found two participants and urged others to look for likely young people who would benefit from the program.

Our meeting - 26 September 2017 - Juries Commissioner - Jury Service - Guest speaker -Paul Dore

Paul is responsible for the efficient and effective management of Victoria’s jury system. To that end, he leads a team of dedicated staff across the State to ensure a sufficient number of Victorian citizens, broadly representative of the community, are available to serve as jurors on Supreme Court and County Court criminal and civil trials.

Paul has held this role since March 2012

What should we say on the front of the Rotary Down Under magazines that we distributed?
We need something catchy to catch the eye of those who pick up the Rotary Down Under magazines which Stan distributes around the waiting rooms of Geelong.

Rotary Foundation - Soup Saver Night - 7 November at East Geelong Uniting Church
We will have a Soup Saver Night at the East Geelong Uniting Church to raise funds for TRF and we will have a first class guest speaker who speaks of his own polio experience.
It is on 7 November and we aim to raise $1,000.00.

Instead of meeting at The Eastern Hub, will be meeting at the East Geelong Uniting Church and for $20.00 will be enjoying a choice of three home-made soups, crusty bread and bread rolls, slices and seconds and thirds if required.  All money raised will be sent to The Rotary Foundation, to be put towards the End Polio Now program.  John Birrell is kindly allowing us to use the church facilities for free.

The guest speaker for the night is a well-known radio and television presenter, Gary Newton.  When Gary was not yet one, he contracted polio (the paralysis type) and has lived with this challenge all his life.  His is an inspiring story and he is a wonderful advocate for positive thinking as well as an outstanding worker in the fight against polio.  He is a director of Polio Australia and hopes to travel to India in February next year to help administer oral vaccine to children in last resort locations.
With Partners, Friends of Rotary & Rotaractors, we are hoping to attract around 50 people to this meeting.

October is the month to support Australian Rotary Health and we will take our hats off to mental health. More details to follow.
